What Is the Most Valuable Sports Collectible?

by Zack Johnson 28 Jun 2025

Ever wondered what sports memorabilia commands the highest prices? It’s not always a signed baseball or game-worn jersey—sometimes it's vintage trading cards that fetch astronomical sums.

Here are the top five most valuable sports collectibles ever sold, all of which reached staggering auction records:

🥇 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle Rookie Card – $12.6 million

The crown jewel of baseball cards. In August 2022, a mint-condition Mantle rookie card sold for $12.6 million at Heritage Auctions.  Dubbed the “Mona Lisa” of cards, this iconic collectible remains the highest-earning single sports item ever.

🥈 Michael Jordan’s 1998 “Last Dance” Jersey – $10.1 million

Worn during Game 1 of the legendary 1998 NBA Finals, Jordan’s jersey set a new benchmark when it sold for $10.1 million in 2022.

🥉 Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” Jersey – $9.28 million

Arguably the most infamous item in soccer history, Maradona’s jersey from the 1986 quarter-final versus England sold for $9.28 million in 2022.

🏅 Honus Wagner T206 Baseball Card – $7.25 million

The ultimate baseball rarity. This legendary 1909–11 card sold privately for $7.25 million and remains one of the most coveted collectibles ever created.

🐐 Babe Ruth’s 1932 “Called Shot” World Series Jersey – $24.12 million

In April 2024, this iconic jersey from Babe Ruth’s famous home run in the 1932 World Series fetched a jaw-dropping $24.12 million, blowing past previous records!

📊 Why Do These Items Sell for So Much?

  1. Scarcity & Provenance – Jerseys and cards linked to historic moments, authenticated and rare, drive up value.

  2. Legendary Athletes – Icons like Mantle, Jordan, Ruth, Maradona, and Wagner transcend sports—they’re cultural symbols.

  3. Condition & Authentication – Be it PSA grading or professional photo-matching, verified authenticity is crucial.

💡 Takeaway for Collectors & Fans

If you own a well-preserved rookie card, game-used item, or iconic logo piece, you might be sitting on something extremely valuable—though most collections are worth far less than record-breaking sums. Still, collecting is as much about passion and history as it is about investment.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
